Ella Travel Guide: Hikes, Tea & Colonial Bridges 2025
Ella is a traveler’s dream in Sri Lanka’s verdant hill country. This charming town, whose name fittingly means “waterfall” in Sinhala, enchants visitors with its misty mountains, sprawling tea plantations, and relaxed atmosphere. From exhilarating hikes to serene landscapes, Ella offers a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. Let our comprehensive guide help you plan an unforgettable journey to this captivating hill country destination.
Getting There and Around

The Scenic Train Journey
The most picturesque way to reach Ella from Kandy is by taking the famous blue train.
- Duration: Approximately 7 hours
- Cost: Depending on class (1 class reserved recommended), aircon is available in addition, windows are fully open for pictures and clear views. I recommend this option.
- Scenery: Breathtaking views of tea plantations, mountains, and waterfalls
Pro tip: Book your Kandy to Ella train tickets in advance through the official Sri Lanka Railways e-ticket platform: https://pravesha.lk/en.
Tips for Train Travel and Luggage
- Pack light: Overhead storage is limited, especially in 2nd—and 3rd-class carriages. Backpacks or small roll-along suitcases are best.
- Large suitcases are challenging: Bringing large rolling suitcases can be difficult. Consider using a travel backpack instead.
- Luggage allowances:
- First Class: 40 kg
- Second Class: 35 kg
- Third Class: 25 kg
- Keep valuables close: Keep your belongings in sight to prevent theft.
- Reserved carriages: In reserved carriages, you can store larger suitcases at the front or back ends of the carriage.
- Secure your luggage: Ensure your bags are securely locked.
- Be prepared to carry: You must carry your luggage onto the train yourself, so pack accordingly.
- Consider alternatives: If possible, arrange for a driver to transport large luggage to your destination. The most enjoyable way I choose. (air tags will let you track your luggage)

Airport Information
While there is no airport directly in Ella, there are several airports nearby that you can fly into:
- Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): Located approximately 75 km from Ella, this is the closest international airport.
- Weerawila International Airport (WRZ): About 73 km from Ella.
You can reach a taxi, bus, or train after arriving at these airports. I recommend and prefer the scenic train journey from Kandy to Ella, which is often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.
How Long to Stay
A 2-3 night stay in Ella is ideal for exploring the waterfalls, hiking, tea plantations, and enjoying the city’s chill vibe. I also enjoyed the shops and restaurants in the central city.
Travel Tips:
Try not to over-schedule yourself. Some hikes and waterfall locations will take some time to hike, mainly depending on the weather conditions. I recommend spending some downtime with a tea tasting and exploring the town during the hottest part of the day.
Getting Around Ella
Ella is walkable within the main city center, with tuk-tuks, bicycles, and scooters available for longer distances.

Tipping is generally appreciated in Sri Lanka but not mandatory. Here’s a guide on tipping etiquette:

- Hotel Staff: Tip concierge or housekeeping staff between 200 and 600 LKR per service (e.g., luggage assistance or room cleaning).

- Taxi/Tuk-Tuk Drivers: Round up fares or tip an additional 100–200 LKR if satisfied with their service.
