Daytona Beach: The Complete Coastal Travel Guide

Dreaming of sun, sand, and a lively Florida atmosphere? Daytona Beach is your destination for iconic events, beautiful beaches, and easy day trips.

One of the city’s most unique traditions is the ability to drive and park your car on the hard-packed sand—a nod to Daytona’s early motorsports history. Just north, Ormond Beach offers a quieter, scenic alternative—perfect for relaxing escapes and local dining. Whether planning a quick getaway or a weeklong adventure, this Daytona Beach travel guide highlights the best places to stay, eat, and explore.

Best Time to Visit Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach enjoys mild winters and warm, sunny summers, making it a year-round destination. Here’s a seasonal breakdown to help you plan your Daytona Beach vacation:

Spring (March–May)

  • Average high: 74–85°F (23–29°C)
  • Average low: 55–66°F (13–19°C)
  • Water temperature: 69–77°F (21–25°C)

Spring is the best time to visit Daytona Beach, especially from mid-April to late May, with warm weather and pleasant ocean temperatures. Due to spring break, March is busier and more expensive, but crowds thin out by April.

Pro tip: Stay nearby Ormond Beach instead of downtown Daytona to save money, avoid crowds, and still be close to all the action.

Summer (June–August)

  • Average high: 88–90°F (31–32°C)
  • Average low: 73–75°F (23–24°C)
  • Water temperature: 81–85°F (27–29°C)

Expect high heat, humidity, and frequent afternoon showers. The beaches are lively, and the ocean is perfect for swimming. (Lightning is common during these short storms, and many pools and outside attractions will close outdoors until the weather has cleared.)

Pro tip: I recommend using sweat—and water-resistant sunscreen and booking beach chairs and umbrellas early. Afternoon storms are perfect for a quick rest break. One of my favorite things to do at the end of the day is a sunset stroll or dinner and drinks by the ocean.

Fall (September–November)

  • Average high: 77–90°F (25–32°C)
  • Average low: 60–76°F (16–24°C)
  • Water temperature: 76–84°F (24–29°C)

Early fall remains warm, with ocean temperatures ideal for swimming. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, making this an excellent time for a quieter visit.

Pro tip: This is considered shoulder season, so that accommodation prices will be lower, and outdoor events are still plentiful. (November is the end of hurricane season, which is June 1-November 30)

Winter (December–February)

  • Average high: 65–71°F (18–22°C)
  • Average low: 46–53°F (8–12°C)
  • Water temperature: 67–71°F (19–22°C)

Winters are mild and sunny, though the ocean may be cooler for some swimmers. It’s a peaceful time for wildlife sightings and enjoying stunning sunsets.

Pro tip: Book accommodations and rental cars in Daytona Beach early! This is considered high season in Florida. Daytona Beach receives approximately 63,000 visitors during the winter season, and Florida receives approximately 39 million visitors. Celebrating the holidays in the perfect sunny skies and sandy beaches is worth planning ahead!

Getting Around Daytona Beach

Ubers, taxis, and ride services are available, but renting a car in Daytona Beach is the most cost-effective and flexible way to get around.

Convenient car rental locations:

Both spots offer easy access to rental cars for your trip.

Pro tip: Parking in Daytona Beach can be expensive and limited close to downtown and popular attractions. If you are not planning on staying the entire day at one location, consider taking a ride-share service to your destination, leaving your car at your accommodations. It may save you time, money, and stress.

It is famous for its humongous (the size of your head) all-you-can-eat cinnamon rolls—warm, gooey, and generously glazed. The restaurant also features a buffet-style “fixin’s bar” with Southern sides, hearty breakfast buffets, and classic seafood.
