Airport Information
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the main gateway to Sri Lanka. Upon arrival, you have several transportation options:
- Ride-share: The most efficient way to reach Colombo city center, taking 30-60 minutes depending on traffic.
- Taxis and Uber: Available at the airport, with fares ranging from $40-60 USD.
- Airport transfers: Pre-booked services like Welcome Pick-Ups offer reliability and cost-effectiveness, and they will monitor your flight for any delays and wait for you at no extra charge. This gave me great peace of mind.
Travel Tips
- Apply for your Visa at least three weeks in advance through the Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization system.
- For steady connectivity, purchase an e-SIM card before arrival or a regular SIM at the airport. Major credit cards, including Wise Cards, are accepted for payment.
- Withdraw cash from ATMs at the main terminal before exiting. Having cash on hand was convenient, safe, and necessary before exiting the airport.

- Cash is needed to enter smaller venues, Tuk-tuks, smaller purchases, and tipping.

- Private drivers: Arrange through your hotel for half-day or full-day tours. This is an efficient and comfortable way to see the city sites. It is reasonably priced and comes with perks, such as skip the lines to some attractions, English speaking driver, air-conditioned car, inside tip from local, and flexibility if you decide on your itinerary.
- Ride-share and tuk-tuks: These are readily available, but negotiated prices have smaller bills for payment beforehand.

- Understand the Sri Lankan head bobble, a gentle side-to-side head movement that is a cultural way of not giving you a direct No to your request without offending anyone. Politeness or Ambiguity. Sri Lankan people are hospitable and kind and will go out of their way to accommodate you however they can. This gesture is when they are unsure if they can meet your request.
It can also mean that locals show they’re engaged or follow along with what’s being said. It’s almost always positive! When in doubt, smile back and enjoy this unique aspect of Sri Lankan culture.

- Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque: Marvel at the stunning Indo-Saracenic architecture (check visiting times). plan ahead for this visit. Visitors are only allowed to enter through gate number 3 on the side of the mosque. Fridays are holy day. Visitors are not permitted. coverings are provided.
- Old Dutch Hospital: Explore this colonial-era building, a vibrant shopping and dining precinct. You will find Minister of Crab restaurant here I highly recommend it!
