Albania Shalë River Travel Guide
Introduction
Are you looking for the perfect family-friendly getaway in Albania? The Shalë River in the Northern Albanian Alps offers a variety of activities for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
I experienced my first trip to this destination and highly suggest you put it on your list of things to do while visiting Albania. Day trips from the capital city of Tirana or nearby locations provide easy access to hiking, kayaking, rafting, swimming, and relaxing while sunbathing by the river, admiring the stunning Albanian Mountains and wildlife. Let’s dive into the Shalë River experience.
Location
The Shalë River in northern Albania is a tranquil waterway that flows for approximately 30 kilometers, starting in the mountainous regions and winding through lush valleys before joining the Valbona River. This area is renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes and various water activities, making it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families seeking adventure.
It’s an unspoiled spot ideal for immersing oneself in the beauty of nature away from the crowds. Blini Park is a spot along the Shalë River that is less touristy and often frequented by locals—a relaxing environment with friendly people and plenty of space to spread out.
How to get to the Shalë River
Day trips to the Shalë River are the most popular during the warmer months. I recommend taking a day tour because it is the most affordable and relaxing way to make the trip. I enjoyed my solo traveler trip with Beautiful Albania, which was terrific.
Day trips start in the early morning, at 6 am, and return, depending on your departure site, at 9 pm. It is well worth the early morning wake-up! Your eyes will not believe the unbelievable views you experience throughout the day.
Taking a Day Tour allows you time to view the various small towns along the way and enjoy the planned stops for coffee and food.
The prices range from 30-40 Euro/ 35-40 USD per person.
One mention to my fellow travelers: if you are sensitive to winding roads, request a front seat from the tour company. It might have a nominal fee, but it will be worth it if this is important to you.
Most tours include:
· Coach Bus transportation round trip
· Lake Koman
· Boat Transportation round trip
· Experienced Guide to explain history and landmarks
· No extra cost except your food or optional activities you select
Can you drive yourself to Shalë River?
Yes, I would not recommend it. Here is my reason for not choosing to. The roads you will be navigating are narrow through the mountains. Additionally, the roads themselves are not in good repair!!
Unless you are from the area and very familiar with the terrain, I would opt for the tour. It is well worth the money.
Activities Along the Shalë River
Whether you’re seeking adventure or a peaceful day in nature, the Shalë River has something for everyone.
Hiking
The area boasts numerous trails, ranging from easy paths perfect for families to more challenging routes for experienced hikers. Popular hikes include the Shalë Gorge Trail, which follows the gorge, offering stunning views of the river and rock formations.
The Shalë River Trail is also a scenic hike along the river, showcasing its natural beauty, wildlife, and landscapes.
Kayaking & Zipline
For those seeking adventure, the river’s clear crystal waters and occasional rapids provide excellent opportunities for kayaking and rafting. For around 20 Euros, you can rent a kayak for the entire day and explore the vast river surrounded by mountain waterways.
For those thrill seekers wanting to zip above the Shalë River, this unique experience awaits you.
Swimming
The inviting crystal waters along the Shalë River, Blini Park, are great for a refreshing swim during the warmer months. I spent a beautiful hot day in July along the Shalë River in Blini Park, Shkoder. Entering the waters was refreshing and was the perfect place to be on a hot summer day!
I suggest you wear water shoes if possible. Blini Park and the surrounding Shalë River area are rock-based.
Due to the moving current, the river rocks can sometimes be slippery. Additionally, along the river, there are different depths. Some are better suited for jumping, and swimmers are less skilled.
Sunbathing
Shalë River combines river rocks and natural-based coverings depending on your selected area. Blini Park has comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas for a reasonable rate of around €5-10 a day. I found them very comfortable and helpful for some needed shade throughout the day.
You can also bring towels or mats free of charge to place and enjoy the sunshine and river.
Food
Locations along the Shalë River offer various food options. Blini Park is a popular recreational area with picnic areas and playgrounds, making it an excellent spot for families and everyone who enjoys the outdoors.
· Drinks – Non-alcoholic & Alcoholic
· Desserts- Ice cream, candy, sweet pastry
· Light meals- pizza, sandwiches, fish
· Snacks- Chips, cookies, etc.
Many people bring food and drinks in a small cooler, which is permitted on the tour bus and boat.
Being a solo traveler, I picked up a sandwich and drink at my favorite place the night before my early morning trip and froze my drink for my ice pack, which worked out great. I enjoyed purchasing drinks and snacks throughout my trip.
Best Time to Visit
The most popular months to visit are July and August when the weather is warm and ideal for outdoor activities. My experience was in July, and it was hot, but the refreshing water of the Shalë River and the breeze during my travels on the boats made the day an enchanting experience.
Exploring Northern Albania in peak season, families can enjoy hiking, swimming, sunbathing, exploring beautiful landscapes, and viewing wildlife.
Family-Friendly Environment
The Shalë River and Blini Park area are family-friendly, with many trails suitable for children and advanced hikers—activities like swimming and kayaking, along with the tranquil natural surroundings. Blini Park is a less touristy area than other parts of the river.
I experienced friendly locals and tourists alike. Grab an ice cream and sit back, taking in the Northern Albanian Alps for a chill, relaxing vibe.
Conclusion
The Shalë River is an excellent destination for families and adventure enthusiasts looking to connect with nature and enjoy pristine, unspoiled nature. It offers something for everyone, including hiking, water activities, and a tranquil natural environment.
Whether you’re a solo traveler or a family/group looking for a low-key day full of fun activities and a relaxing environment, I highly suggest adding the Koman Lake and Shalë River to your list when visiting Albania.
